HC Deb 29 January 1942 vol 377 c913
39. Mr. George Griffiths

asked the Home Secretary whether, at the first local authorities elections after the war, the whole members of the council will be required to seek re-election, or will only one-third retire?

Mr. H. Morrison

I am not in a position to make a statement at the present time.

Lieut.-Commander Gurney Braithwaite

In view of the fact that the war has lasted nearly three years, will my right hon. Friend consider having the vacancies which arise on local bodies filled by election rather than by co-option?

Mr. Morrison

That would present considerable difficulties and be very inconvenient. I will consider the point raised by my hon. Friend the Member for Hemsworth (Mr. G. Griffiths), and I hope to make a statement later.
