HC Deb 29 January 1942 vol 377 cc922-3
61. Sir Percy Hurd

asked the Minister of Health how many houses have been built by rural district councils in England and Wales since the last war; how many other houses have been built with the aid of grants from such councils; and what is the total number of houses built in rural areas in this period?

Mr. E. Brown

The number of houses built by rural district councils between the beginning of 1919 and 31st March, 1941, was 162,263, and the number of houses built by private enterprise with the aid of Exchequer assistance was 134,489. The total number of houses built in rural districts during the period was 865,539.

Sir P. Hurd

Does the Minister realise that, although there is much to be done in regard to rural housing, this result is rather a considerable achievement?

Mr. Brown

Yes, Sir, and I wish there was time to do much more.
