Mr. Kirbyasked the Minister without Portfolio whether he is aware that some local authorities of towns and cities suffering severely from enemy action are actively considering the problems of planning and reconstruction which will be necessary at the conclusion of hostilities, to ensure that really worthwhile efforts to rebuild their industrial, commercial and social life will be successful in a lasting sense; and can he indicate how far the Government is prepared to legislate so as to ensure that plans made will be supported by legislation empowering local authorities to acquire land and property, damaged or otherwise, to make new highways, close roads, divert roads, and in all other ways be able' to carry out such postwar reconstruction schemes as may be planned in advance as necessary and desirable in the public interest?
§ The Minister without Portfolio (Mr. Arthur Greenwood)Yes, Sir, the wide range of topics referred to by my hon. Friend are under consideration both by the local authorities and by the Government. It is too soon to attempt to indicate the scope of the legislation which may be necessary, but he may be assured that any necessary action will be taken in due course.
