§ 41. Sir R. Glynasked the Minister of Information whether his attention has been drawn to a recently released short film by his Department entitled "Germany Calling"; for what purpose this cleverly cut picture was intended to ridicule the German army; and whether he will stop propaganda tending to underrate the enemy's strength?
§ Mr. BrackenYes, Sir. This short film which occupied two and a half minutes in showing was an effective squib at the expense of Hitler, and I do not think that it was out of place. I am most firmly opposed to any propaganda which is intended to under-rate the enemy's strength: but I feel that it would be a mistake to exclude ridicule altogether from the weapons of propaganda.
§ Sir R. GlynHas the Minister seen this film, and does he think that British troops engaged in fighting the Germans appreciate this type of film, which shows the 712 German army cake-walking and doing other ridiculous things to jazz tunes?
§ Mr. BrackenI have seen the film. The hon. Member must remember that this little film ridicules Hitler and makes him a figure of fun. I think that the British troops who have seen it enjoyed it thoroughly. It has been sent to Moscow, and I am told they are absolutely delighted with it.
