54. Mr. James Griffiths

asked the Lord President of the Council whether the investigation

serving 716 collieries are in operation at the present time and canteens to serve a further 464 collieries are in preparation. The detailed figures asked for by the hon. Member will be provided in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Mr. Smith

Is the Secretary for Mines satisfied that all sections of the industry are co-operating with a view to bringing about the maximum arrangements, and have the arrangements that have been made resulted in increased output?

Mr. Grenfell

There is better co-operation now than there was six or nine months ago. I think the work has been very well done, and I am sure that the results are very satisfactory and that the men are in a better condition than they were before.

Following are the details:

into the incidence of silicosis among coalminers in South Wales has now been completed; and whether he can make a statement indicating the findings of the Committee and their recommendations?

The Lord President of the Council (Sir John Anderson)

The investigation has been completed. A full report on the medical studies is in the Press, and will be available within a few weeks; it will be prefaced by a statement giving the findings and recommendations of the committee. A second report which deals with the environmental studies is almost ready for printing.
