Colonel Carverasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether, in view of the order for an increased production of potatoes and carrots, he is aware of the large accumulation of these, which merchants are reluctant to buy or remove, as they themselves have their storage places filled; and whether, as the position is at present discouraging to growers, he will consider taking over of these crops, and not leaving the responsibility for depreciation and loss entirely on the grower?
Major Lloyd GeorgeYes, Sir, I am aware that, in accordance with Government policy, there are substantial reserves of potatoes and carrots in the country. With regard to potatoes, I am advised that there is a steady trade and no accumulation in growers' hands inconsistent with the holding of stocks for trading until the end of the season. Growers who wish to be relieved of finding a market for their potatoes may offer them to the Ministry for purchase not later than 31st March, 1942. The Ministry will also take over any surplus unsold by growers on 31st May, 1942. With regard to carrots, growers are compensated for normal depreciation of stocks held by them on the farm, by means of a rising scale of prices to the end of May. They also have the assurance that all sound and marketable carrots will be purchased by the National Vegetable Marketing Company.
