HC Deb 08 January 1942 vol 377 c32
58. Mr. Price

asked the Minister of Agriculture what steps are being taken to improve rough pastures and upland grazings suitable for sheep; and whether he can give a figure for the acreage thus dealt with?

Mr. Hudson

The extensive powers delegated to county war agricultural executive committees for increasing the productivity of agricultural land apply, of course, to hill pastures with their special problems. Special measures for the direct improvement of hill land include schemes for the assistance of bracken cutting, upland water supply and drainage, and the application of lime and basic slag. I am unable to give any reliable figure of the acreage of hill land dealt with by these various direct and indirect measures. The Agricultural Improvement Council has the question of hill and upland pastures under consideration.
