§ The Minister of Health (Mr. Ernest Brown)The total capital expenditure on subsidised housing in England and Wales since 1919, up to 31st March, 1941, was approximately £836,000,000, of which it is estimated that £578,000,000 was in respect of building by local authorities and £258,000,000 by private enterprise. The number of houses built in the same period was 1,178,011 by local authorities and 3,055,691 by private enterprise, of which 433,980 were built with State assistance. During the years ended 31st March, 1940, and 31st March, 1941, loans for the provision of new housing accommodation by 6 local authorities were sanctioned to the extent of £11,661,982 and £2,101,548 respectively.
