HC Deb 25 February 1942 vol 378 c188
24. Mr. Roland Robinson

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether, in view of the shortage of man-power, he will issue an instruction that junior officers who can pass the necessary driving tests shall drive their own motor-cars so as to release service drivers of both sexes for other work?

Mr. George Hall

All officers who are necessarily required to use motor cars on duty can use and drive their own cars for this purpose, thus obviating the need for provision of special Service cars and drivers. In addition, officers can drive Service vehicles where this can conveniently be arranged, thereby dispensing with the services of drivers of either sex. Any officer possessing a driving licence is considered to be competent to drive his own or an official car for official purposes, and the institution of a special Service driving test would therefore be unnecessary.
