HC Deb 25 February 1942 vol 378 cc206-7
62. Sir P. Hannon

asked the Minister of Information whether has now taken steps to send to the United States of America practical business men trained in particular branches of industry to make clear to leaders of industry in the United States of America the substance and quality of the war effort in this country from the technical point of view?

The Minister of Information (Mr. Brendan Bracken)

Since the beginning of the war many business men have visited the United States either on matters concerning their own business or to represent Departments concerned with Supply. I do not think that it would be wise or necessary for me to send business men as special emissaries for the Ministry of Information.

Sir P. Hannon

In view of the important statement made in the House yesterday by the Dominions Secretary, surely some action by His Majesty's Government is necessary if trade is to be maintained between ourselves and the United States?

Mr. Bracken

I think that business men would be much better off looking after their own business.

Mr. Gallacher

Would it not be an advantage if the Minister sent all the business men of the country and never allowed them back again?
