HC Deb 03 February 1942 vol 377 c1024
4. Mr. Bellenger

asked the Secretary of State for War how much money was allocated from public funds for welfare work in the Army during the years 1940 and 1941, respectively?

Captain Margesson

The amounts of money allocated from public funds for welfare work in the Army during the financial years 1940–41 and 1941–42 were £629,500 and £818,500, respectively. A comprehensive scheme to deal with the welfare of the Army was not introduced until September, 1940, so that the former sum covered only about six months of the year, but it allowed for some heavy initial capital expenditure. These amounts do not include the considerable sums spent annually by Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes on providing professional entertainment for the troops.
