HC Deb 16 December 1942 vol 385 cc1933-4
72. Mr. Oldfield

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether he is aware of the need for improved transport facilities to and from Trafford Park, Davyhulme and other parts; what action is to be taken; and has consideration been given to the utilisation of the Bridgewater Canal for carrying passengers in suitably speeded-up barges, seeing that the canal is a link between Trafford Park and many industrial and residential areas?

Mr. Noel-Baker

As my hon. Friend is aware, there is a Local Transport Consultative Committee in this area, which is widely representative of the travelling public, including the workers, and in which complaints can be raised about the transport services which are provided. I have not, however, received any complaint that the existing services are inadequate either from this Consultative Committee or from the Factory Managements. The services are under constant review and adjustments are made from time to time as may be required; but if my hon. Friend will let me know of any difficulties which are being experienced, I will make inquiries. I regret that the Bridgewater Canal is not suitable for a passenger service. In order to avoid damage to the banks, the maximum speed permitted is about four miles an hour. The average speed for a passenger service, including stops, would, therefore, be appreciably less, and in these circumstances I do not see my way to accept my hon. Friend's proposal.
