HC Deb 16 December 1942 vol 385 cc1930-1
66. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food the considerations which necessitated a separate ham and bacon department in the livestock section of the Ministry of Food?

Mr. Mabane

The supply and distribution of bacon was and is considered a task of sufficient magnitude to justify a separate division within my Department.

Sir W. Smithers

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say why those operating the bacon and ham scheme buy and sell the meat on behalf of the Ministry under a different system from that adopted in the case of other livestock, which is sold on a live-weight basis, whereas the pigs are sold on a dead-weight basis?

Mr. Mabane

I think that point is covered by my answer to the previous Question by my hon. Friend.
