HC Deb 03 December 1942 vol 385 c1288
37. Mr. Mathers

asked the Home Secretary the salary attached to the position of Regional Commissioner for Civil Defence in Scotland?

Mr. H. Morrison

The salary attached to the position of Regional Commissioner for Scotland is the same as for other Regional Commissioners, namely, a maximum of £2,500 a year. It is left to individual Commissioners to decide what remuneration, if any, they will accept within the maximum allowable.

Mr. Mathers

Will my right hon. Friend confirm the fact that, from the establishment of this office, none of this salary has been drawn by either of the two holders of the office?

Mr. Morrison

This issue has arisen, and it is natural that, at the end of the day, I must give the House an account of the disbursement of public money, but, having given to the House what the maximum salary is, I must bear in mind that as the personal financial circumstances of Commissioners vary and that some do the work for nothing or for very little, it would be invidious if I gave the details of each case.

Mr. Mathers

I recognise what the Minister says, but if I can show him how unfair reflections have been made on the holders of this post, perhaps he would be willing to reconsider, his decision.
