HC Deb 03 December 1942 vol 385 c1279
11. Mr. Thorneycroft

asked the Minister of Health whether, in view of the appeal made to the people of the country to be economical in the use of all fuels, he will reconsider the application made by the Manchester Corporation, in June of this year, to purchase 16 washing machines and two hydro-extractors for their various public washhouses, where the demand for accommodation continues to increase; and is he aware of the benefit this service provides for the working women of the city?

Mr. E. Brown

On further consideration of this application I have decided to recommend to the Board of Trade the issue of the licences which are necessary to cover a substantial proportion of the machinery involved. The answer to the latter part of the question is "Yes."
