HC Deb 03 December 1942 vol 385 cc1310-1
12. Mr. Lipson

asked the Minister of Health whether he will circularise the local authorities with a view to ensuring that casual vacancies arising on their staffs during the war should be filled only by temporary appointments so that men and women in the Forces may have the opportunity to apply for these posts after the war?

Mr. E. Brown

I have every sympathy with my hon. Friend's suggestion, but the matter is one for local authorities themselves, and' I have not' felt that it would be right for me to intervene.

Mr. Lipson

In view of the fact that this is causing great concern to many men and women in the Forces, cannot my right hon. Friend send a circular round suggesting that these vacancies should be filled only by temporary appointments?

Mr. Brown

To that suggestion I have said, "No," but I express my sympathy with the suggestion.
