HC Deb 03 December 1942 vol 385 cc1302-3
59. Mr. Thorne

asked the President of the Board of Trade to what part of the country he proposes to remove the hat trade from Luton; and the reasons for his decision?

Captain Waterhouse

My right hon. Friend does not propose to move the hat industry out of Luton. The industry there must be contracted in order to release further labour directly or indirectly for war work, but some nucleus of hat production will remain in Luton to employ workers unsuitable for war work.

Mr. Mathers

Is any compensation being given to the place to which it was intended to transfer this industry?
