HC Deb 01 December 1942 vol 385 cc992-3
68. Mr. McKinlay

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the number of aliens registered with the police in the Isle of Bute together with their nationality?

The Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Peake)

The total number is 109, of whom 39 are Belgians, 28 Poles, 15 Italians, 8 Dutch, 8 Norwegians, 6 Americans, 2 Russians, 1 Brazilian, 1 Swedish and 1 German.

Mr. McKinlay

Will the hon. Gentleman inform the House on whose instructions a number of Poles are being detained?

Mr. Peake

The figures I have given to the hon. Member are quite accurate, but if he has any further point to bring to my notice, I should be glad to consider it.

Mr. McKinlay

I am trying to indicate that more than 28 Poles are upon the Isle of Bute, and to ask on whose instructions they are there and why they are so detained.

Mr. Peake

That would not be a question for me to answer.
