HC Deb 05 August 1942 vol 382 cc1035-6
62. Flight-Lieutenant Boothby

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether he is satisfied that the fish now being landed in Peterhead, Fraserburgh, Macduff, and other northern Scottish ports, are being given adequate and timely clearance; and whether he will take steps to ensure that herring in particular are not wasted, but are distributed quickly and equitably over as wide an area as possible?

Mr. Mabane

I am satisfied that, at the ports mentioned, the landings of fish are being disposed of in reasonable time and without special difficulty. All landings of herrings have been cleared and distributed as widely as possible. My Noble Friend is at present considering if special steps are necessary to ensure at all times an equitable distribution of herrings, either fresh or as kippers.

Flight-Lieutenant Boothby

Will not the Minister consider the possibility of making certain quantities of cured herring available, as well as fresh herring?

Mr. Mabane

Yes; Sir, and I may say that we took action in this sense in connection with some heavy landings at Buckie on 1st August.
