HC Deb 30 September 1941 vol 374 cc460-1
56. Sir Adam Maitland

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether his attention has been drawn to the hardships inflicted upon persons with small incomes by reason of the existing high rates of taxation and the increased cost of living; and whether, in the preparation of his next Budget proposals, he will consider extending the present statutory allowances in order to alleviate the distress of such persons?

Sir K. Wood

My hon. Friend must not expect me to anticipate the Budget Statement.

Sir A. Maitland

I have not asked my right hon. Friend to do that, but merely to give special consideration to the hardships inflicted in the cases to which I have referred.
