HC Deb 30 September 1941 vol 374 c452
43. Major Milner

asked the Secretary for Mines whether he will endeavour to prevail upon colliery companies to pay wages on Thursdays so as to enable miners' wives to do their shopping in good time, and thus obtain their fair share of unrationed goods, which, because of short supply, are frequently disposed of before miners receive their wages on a Friday, or more usually on a Saturday?

Mr. Grenfell

I am afraid that any attempt to arrange a Thursday pay day for the industry generally would give rise to a number of difficulties in regard to the "making up" day. I am prepared, however, to look into any case where men who are paid on Saturday desire to be paid on Friday and to see whether the necessary arrangements can be made.

Major Milner

While I appreciate that reply, would my hon. Friend, instead of asking for specific instances, because I have already supplied him with some, let that view be generally known so that some action might be taken by colliery companies?

Mr. Grenfell

There are not many cases where companies have failed to make arrangements, but I should be glad to make it known that the convenience of the workmen should be studied in this matter.
