§ 6. Mr. Bellengerasked the Secretary of State for War whether it is proposed to publish the despatches of the general officer commanding in chief Middle East Forces concerning the Abyssinian, Syrian and Iraq campaigns; and, if so, when?
§ Captain MargessonIt would not at present be in the public interest to publish the despatch describing the campaigns in Syria and Iraq, as it contains a great deal of military information which would be of value to the enemy. No despatches have yet been received with regard to the Abyssinian campaign.
§ Mr. BellengerIn view of the answer he has given, may I ask my right hon. and gallant Friend whether it has been laid down as a principle that no military despatches are to be published about operations during the war?
§ Captain MargessonNo, Sir, that is not laid down as a principle, but in any publication one has to exercise the greatest care that nothing is given away of use to the enemy.
