§ 23. Sir J. Mellorasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether he is now able to state the number of additional passenger trains run during the August Bank Holiday weekend; and the additional amount of coal consumed?
§ Colonel LlewellinThere were 2,000 relief trains, and the amount of coal consumed was 5,500 tons.
§ Sir J. MellorDo not these figures suggest that the announcement that no additional trains would be run was an unfortunate piece of bluff?
§ Colonel LlewellinI do not think so. I think a certain number of people were discouraged from travelling by the announcement which also in advance gave us a very good ground for dealing with any complaints which might have arisen.
