HC Deb 09 September 1941 vol 374 c25
36. Mr. Culverwell

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that toys salvaged from a New York shipment which was bombed after its arrival in this country were recently auctioned at Clerkenwell; and will he state the value of toy imported this year and prohibit the import of such unessential goods?

Sir A. Duncan

My attention has been drawn to the auction to which my hon. Friend presumably refers, and I am having inquiries made.

Mr. Culverwell

Is my right hon. Friend aware that the Question was put down a fortnight ago?

Sir A. Duncan

These inquiries have been proceeding since, and as they involve legal considerations they are not yet concluded.

Mr. Culverwell

Surely the right hon. Gentleman can inform the House whether the import of these non-essential goods has already been prohibited?

Sir A. Duncan

That is part of the legal question.
