§ 57. Mr. Edmund Harveyasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Supply whether his attention has been called to the need for fuller supplies of paper for the publication of books; and whether he can arrange to release a larger quantity of paper for this purpose?
§ Mr. Harold MacmillanThe quantity of paper allocated to book publishing is considerably higher, compared with normal times, than that allowed for a number of other important uses, and I fear I can hold out no hope in present circumstances of being able to increase it. I trust that publishers will be able to agree upon 990 measures for making the most economical use of the paper available.
§ Mr. HarveyDoes my hon. Friend realise that there have already been serious complaints from leading publishers about the great waste of paper on unnecessary literature and publications which might be stopped?
§ Mr. MacmillanI am well aware of the complaints of publishers as to publications, both necessary and otherwise.
§ Mr. R. C. MorrisonWill my hon. Friend draw the attention of publishers to the fact that Members of Parliament continue to receive many publications which they do not desire to receive?
§ Mr. MacmillanA number of books are published that might well be dispensed with.
