HC Deb 08 October 1941 vol 374 c991
60. Mr. Thorne

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food how many firms are now making margarine; how many tons are being made; whether he can state the calories in margarine and butter; and what kind of nuts and oils the manufacturers use in making margarine?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food (Major Lloyd George)

The number of firms making margarine is 27. Output varies according to the ration requirements of the domestic consumers and the allocations made to Trade users. The number of calories in one pound of butter or margarine is 3,616, the calorific value being the same. Margarine is made from oils only, the oils generally used being Ground Nut Oil, Cotton Seed Oil, Coconut Oil, Palm Kernel Oil, Palm Oil and Whale Oil.
