HC Deb 27 November 1941 vol 376 cc888-9
59. Mr. Evelyn Walkden

asked the Home Secretary whether free indoor Morrison shelters are available 1o applicants although overground shelters have been erected outside or in close proximity to the applicant's residence; and whether he is aware that the Wandsworth Borough Council are refusing applications for Morrison-type shelters on the grounds that shelter accommodation has already been provided, but without regard to the fact that indoor domestic shelters may better serve semi-invalids or elderly people?

Mr. H. Morrison

In order to avoid duplication of shelter, the indoor table shelter is not issued to householders who have an Anderson shelter in usable condition or other type of suitable shelter within easy access. The position of persons who for medical reasons cannot use existing shelter is under consideration and I hope shortly to issue guidance to local authorities on this subject.

Mr. Walkden

Does that apply in the whole of the London region?

Mr. Morrison

If I issued guidance, I think it would be to the local authorities generally.
