69. Mr. J. J. Davidsonasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he will institute a full Treasury inquiry into the allocation of large Government contracts to the firm of George Wimpey and Company since 1938.
§ The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Captain Crookshank)No, Sir. I am not aware of any necessity for such an inquiry.
Mr. DavidsonIs the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that many Members of this House have received serious reports concerning this firm, the 893 prices they pay, and the prices that are paid to them? If evidence is submitted to him, will he reconsider his decision?
§ Captain CrookshankI said that I was not aware of any necessity. If the hon. Member has any grounds for thinking that there is a necessity, I will, of course, consider the grounds which he puts forward.
Mr. DavidsonWill the right hon. and gallant Gentleman consider that this firm has received over £16,000,000 from the Air Ministry, and that there are allegations in regard to relations in the Air Ministry? Would he consider that a matter for investigation?
§ Mr. McKinlayAre this firm's contracts subject to a measurement?
§ Captain CrookshankI am not prepared to make any statement without notice about the work done by this firm.
Mr. DavidsonIn view of the unsatisfactory nature of the reply, I beg to give notice that I shall raise the matter at the earliest opportunity.
