HC Deb 27 November 1941 vol 376 cc889-90
62. Mr. Thorne

asked the Home Secretary whether he can give any information in connection with the four London clubs raided by the police at Stepney, Marlborough Street, Shepherds Bush and Stratton Street, charged-with gaming; how many names were taken at the four clubs by the police; and what action he intends taking about the matter?

Mr. H. Morrison

In the first case, the two principals were fined £100 each and ordered to pay costs amounting to £18. In the second case, the two principals were ordered to pay fines and costs amounting to £85. In the fourth case the fines and costs amounted to £141 5s. In the third case proceedings have not yet been taken.

Mr. Thorne

May I take it that my right hon. Friend read the report of what the magistrate said about this club?

Mr. Morrison

Perhaps I might add that I regard many of these clubs as being thoroughly objectionable, pernicious, and parasitical at any time, and particularly in time of war. I hope that the police and magistrates will take a firm line in dealing with them; and I am sure that if I require additional powers, I shall have the support of the House.
