HC Deb 27 November 1941 vol 376 c880
44. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that the Central Legislature has passed a Motion, without Government opposition, calling for the application to India of the principles embodied in the Atlantic Charter; and whether, in view of this, he is prepared to relate the Charter more positively to the Indian demand for complete self-Government?

Mr. Amery

I have seen a Press report of a resolution adopted by the Central Assembly in the sense referred to. I have nothing to add to the reply which I gave to the hon. Member's Question on this subject on 9th October.

Mr. Sorensen

Does not the right hon. Gentleman appreciate that Indian opinion, both official and non-official, appears to disagree with him regarding the relationship of Point 3 of the Atlantic Charter to the demand in India for independence, and will he not, therefore, reconsider the whole matter in the light of the other interpretation given to it by the Indian people?

Sir H. Williams

Has the right hon. Gentleman's attention been drawn to the fact that the principles approved in relation to this country have been disapproved in relation to India?
