HC Deb 25 November 1941 vol 376 cc577-8
10. Mr. Bellenger

asked the Secretary of State for War what instructions have been issued to paymasters where soldiers who have received an over-issue of pay, due to their names wrongly appearing in Part II Orders, have incurred substantial debits, as considerable hardship is being caused in innumerable cases of this nature through no fault of the soldiers concerned?

Captain Margesson

The function of the paymaster is to adjust the soldier's account in accordance with information published in Part II Orders by the commanding officer, and to keep the latter informed of the man's entitlement and balance, in order that cash issues may be regulated accordingly. The commanding officer, if he thinks that real hardship is involved, is authorised to put forward a submission for write-off of the whole or part of an over-issue. Proposals are now under examination for speeding up the submission and settlement of such cases.
