HC Deb 20 November 1941 vol 376 cc457-8
49. Sir P. Hurd

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he has made further inquiries into the price charged for shallots for planting, namely, 2s. 3d. to 3s. per pound, which means a charge of 1s. 10d. to 2s. 7d. for grading and sorting, etc.; and whether he is aware that, in the experience of allotment associations, a charge of 1s. per pound would be ample?

The Minister of Agriculture (Mr. R. S. Hudson)

In addition to the work of grading and sorting, the production of shallots for planting involves both the use of specially selected stock and extra labour, time and trouble for raising and harvesting. After taking all these considerations into account, the Minister of Food has decided, after consultation with me, that licences issued in respect of sales of shallots for planting at a higher price than the controlled price shall not be granted where the price proposed to be charged is in excess of 1s. per pound by the grower, or 2s. per pound by the retailer.
