HC Deb 29 May 1941 vol 371 c1993
60. Sir T. Moore

asked the Minister of Supply what organised action has now been taken, and with what result, to in duce the ground landlords of London to donate the railings round the gardens in the public squares to the service of the country?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Supply (Mr. Harold Macmillan)

Systematic approaches have been made to the great majority of the parties interested in the ownership of the railings around the London squares, and, as a result, in a large number of cases railings have been surrendered for scrap purposes. There are still difficulties arising from many different interests involved and legal restrictions imposed upon the owners and trustees, but these are being dealt with as rapidly as possible. Meanwhile, the flow is satisfactory from the practical point of view.

Sir T. Moore

May we take it that my hon. Friend will Hot allow anything to interfere with getting this matter dealt with as soon as possible?
