§ 31. Mr. G. Straussasked the Home Secretary whether he is aware of the concern caused by the dismissal during recent months by the Holborn Borough Council of leading members of their air-raid precautions service and recently of 27 stretcher bearers; and whether he will institute an immediate inquiry into these dismissals?
§ Mr. H. MorrisonI am informed that the borough council have found it necessary to dismiss 27 members of the stretcher party service for conduct prejudicial to discipline and good order, and that they are reviewing each case in consultation with the National Union of Public Employés. Meanwhile, steps have been taken to ensure that an adequate service will be maintained.
§ Mr. StraussIs my right hon. Friend aware that these dismissals have been going on for months; that recently 27 men were dismissed and it is alleged they were dismissed because of certain trade union activities; and that there is very considerable concern in the locality?
§ Mr. MorrisonBut there is another side to the story, and I think it would be injudicious on my part to intervene in this matter, which ought to be settled between the local authority and the union concerned.
