HC Deb 15 May 1941 vol 371 c1250
30. Sir H. Williams

asked the Minister of Health on what basis civic restaurants are being assessed for the purpose of local rates?

Mr. E. Brown

The determination of annual value for rating as defined by the relevant statutory provisions is a matter for the local rating and assessment authorities, and I have no information as to the method of valuation adopted by them in the cases to which my hon. Friend refers.

Sir H. Williams

Is the Minister satisfied that these premises are not being subsidised in any way and are paying their full amount of rates?

Mr. Brown

I have no jurisdiction in this matter, but I understand that the Central Valuation Committee have not had to consider the question of assessing ordinary restaurants, which seems to indicate that there should be no difficulty in arriving at a proper settlement of the matter.
