§ 57. Mr. Lawsonasked the Minister of Supply whether he has reason to com plain of the amount of lost time among workers in the factories under his control; and whether he is satisfied with the out put in such factories?
§ Sir A. DuncanOutput from many of our Royal Ordnance factories has been very good, but during the winter months I have been seriously concerned at the amount of lost time at certain of the factories. The lost time was in large measure due to the situation of these factories, to transport difficulties and to the long hours away from home inherent in the two-shift system. By the introduction of the three-shift system, improved transport facilities, and the provision of greatly increased hostel accommodation—all of which measures have been taken—it is believed that the difficulties will be overcome and the total output increased.
§ Mr. LawsonIs it not a fact that, in the vast number of cases, workers are doing a great deal of overtime but are performing a splendid job? Can the Minister make that statement public for the benefit of some people who are whispering and making charges against the workers?
§ Sir A. DuncanI hope that the statement will be made public. Maximum output at all times can only be the reflection of the maximum realisation of the need for total effort by all sections of the community.
§ Sir A. DuncanI very much hope so, and that the summer months will give zest to everybody.
