HC Deb 06 May 1941 vol 371 cc682-3
29. Mr. A. Edwards

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that valuable shipping space is still being used for importing goods not essential for the war effort; and whether he can give an undertaking that from an early date no licence or permit will be issued for anything not essential for war needs?

Mr. Lyttelton

Imports are subject to most rigorous control by licensing. If the hon. Member has any instances in mind where he considers that permitted imports should not have been allowed, I shall be pleased to investigate them if he will let me have the details.

Mr. Edwards

Do I understand that it is the policy of the Government not to allow unessential goods to be imported?
