HC Deb 06 May 1941 vol 371 c700
59. Captain Strickland

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what was the total decrease in the number of licences of private motor-cars in the last quarter of the financial year 1939–40 compared with the corresponding quarter of the previous year; and how this compares with the number of licences for similar vehicles for the last quarter of the financial year 1940–41?

Colonel Llewellin

I have been asked to reply. I am sending my hon. and gallant Friend the figures for which he asks. They are not now published.

Captain Strickland

Would my right hon. and gallant Friend agree that it is rather unfortunate, when a net decrease of nearly 500,000 cars was evidenced between the last quarter of the financial year, this year, as compared with two years ago, he should, when he made his speech on 8th April, express surprise that there had been an increase in the number of cars?

Colonel Llewellin

I have an answer to another Question on the same point.
