HC Deb 06 May 1941 vol 371 c704
The Prime Minister (Mr. Churchill)

I beg to move, That the Proceedings on the Motion relating to Assistance to Greece be exempted, at this day's Sitting, from the provisions of the Standing Order (Sittings of the House). On Thursday, it was suggested by my right hon. Friend the Member for Keighley (Mr. Lees-Smith) that the Sitting today should be extended in order to allow more Members to take part in the Debate on the progress of the war. The Government have considered the suggestion, and propose that to-day's Sitting should be extended by one hour beyond the normal time for the conclusion of Government Business. We think it will be generally convenient to have a definite time for the closing of the Debate to-day, and accordingly the Government will move the Adjournment of the Debate at about the hour I have mentioned. The Foreign Secretary is to open the Debate, as the House is aware, but it will be necessary for him to go out immediately afterwards to attend to an urgent matter, and I hope the House will understand his position and not think it due to any lack of courtesy.

Mr. Buchanan

What about the Second Day's Sitting?

The Prime Minister

We do not propose to extend the time on the second Sitting Day.

Question put, and agreed to.

Ordered,

"That the Proceedings on the Motion relating to Assistance to Greece be exempted, at this day's Sitting, from the provisions of the Standing Order (Sittings of the House)."—[The Prime Minister.]
