HC Deb 18 March 1941 vol 370 cc9-10
19. Mr. Wedgwood

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware of the desire of many of those serving in the Pioneer Corps to join the Fighting Services, especially as air pilots; and will he permit such transfer, commissioned or otherwise, and under what circumstances, conditions and safeguards?

Mr. Law

The Answer to the first part of the Question is, in the affirmative. Transfer to other arms or corps of the Army and to the other two Services is open to suitable personnel of the Pioneer Corps. The conditions applicable to such transfers consist of certain qualifications in respect of age, nationality, medical category and technical proficiency which vary according to the arm, corps or Service to which transfer is sought.

Mr. Wedgwood

Does the qualification about nationality rule out enemy aliens who are friendly to this country and who are allowed in the Pioneer Corps?

Mr. Law

No, Sir, I do not think it would. Every case is considered on its merits.
