HC Deb 18 March 1941 vol 370 cc13-4
29. Miss Cazalet

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether, in order to enable renters or exhibitors to conform with quota requirements under the Films Act, he can state what steps are being taken to maintain British production of feature or short films at the highest possible level?

The President of the Board of Trade (Mr. Lyttelton)

I am well aware of the difficulties facing all sections of the film trade in present circumstances and of the need to maintain the production of British films at the highest level consistent with the national interest. The whole question is under active consideration, and I will make a statement on the subject as soon as I am in a position to do so.

Miss Cazalet

Will my right hon. Friend ensure that sufficient man-power is made available to keep alive this most important industry?

Mr. Lyttelton

I am in communication with my right hon. Friend the Minister of Labour on the subject at this moment.

Mr. Granville

Will the Minister remember that, if film technicians are called up, it will be impossible to make long films or short films, and will he make the strongest representations about it to the Minister of Labour?

Mr. Lyttelton

Yes, Sir.
