HC Deb 04 March 1941 vol 369 cc863-4
The Lord Privy Seal (Mr. Attlee)

I beg to move, That a Select Committee be appointed to inquire into the law and practice governing the disqualifications for membership of the House of Commons by reason of the holding, or the acceptance of, offices or places of profit under the Crown, and to make recommendations. I do not think the House will want me to say anything at length upon this Motion. I think it is wide enough to meet the points that were put forward in the Debate. I hope the Committee established will be large enough to contain all points of view in this House.

Sir Henry Morris-Jones (Denbigh)

I had handed in to you, Mr. Speaker, a manuscript Amendment to this Motion. In view of the general discussion which has taken place, both on the Committee stage and during the Third Reading of the Diplomatic Privileges (Extension) Bill, I shall not seek to move my Amendment.

Question put, and agreed to.

Ordered, That a Select Committee be appointed to enquire into the law and practice governing the disqualifications for Membership of the House of Commons by reason of the holding, or the acceptance of, offices or places of profit under the Crown, and to make recommendations.
