HC Deb 12 June 1941 vol 372 c314
12. Mr. Higgs

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware of the rush that exists to purchase food and other commodities at the week-ends when workers have been paid; and will he investigate the advisability of encouraging the largest adjacent employers to stagger their pay-days, thereby reducing the necessity for queues?

Mr. Bevin

The desirability of staggering pay-days with a view to reducing the concentration of shopping at week-ends, was brought by me to the notice of the British Employers' Confederation and the Trades Union Congress last December, and those two bodies have co-operated with me by communicating on the subject with organisations of employers and trade unions throughout the country.

Mr. Rhys Davies

Does not the confusion referred to largely arise from the fact that the shops are denuded of assistants?
