HC Deb 10 June 1941 vol 372 cc20-1
34. Major Lloyd

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he has any information with regard to the number of tenants of Corporation or other houses in Glasgow who have voluntarily evacuated to reception areas, thus occupying houses which might otherwise be available for homeless people; whether, in such circumstances, the local authority proposes to requisition the houses thus left vacant for re-housing bombed-out families; and whether he has made any representations to the local authority on this subject?

The Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. T. Johnston)

The Corporation of Glasgow are in process of making a survey of unoccupied houses, both those owned by the Corporation and those privately owned. I have asked the Corporation to inform me of the result of the survey at its completion, which I hope will be at an early date. Some houses have already been requisitioned.

Mr. Neil Maclean

Arising out of that reply, has my right hon. Friend taken a census of the houses in East Renfrewshire which are empty and which include a very large number of mansion houses?

Mr. Johnston

Yes, the County Council of Renfrewshire are making a survey of large houses in East Renfrewshire which might accommodate homeless persons.
