HC Deb 15 July 1941 vol 373 c452
49. Mr. Stokes

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will give an assurance that no further War Loans will be raised at a greater rate of interest than 2 per cent.?

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Kingsley Wood)

No, Sir.

Mr. Stokes

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there will be great concern in the country if he attempts to raise a loan at a higher rate of interest, and that there is a growing body of opinion which is conscious of the fact that the war can be financed at a low rate of interest if we set about it in the right way?

Sir K. Wood

I am indebted to the hon. Member for suggestions that he has made, which, however, I have not hitherto been able to adopt.

Mr. Buchanan

Will the right hon. Gentleman consult the Secretary of State for Scotland, who wrote a pamphlet during the last war on interest-free loans?
