HC Deb 03 July 1941 vol 372 cc1493-4
61. Mr. Stokes

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what part is played by the Treasury in fixing the market price of gold?

Sir K. Wood

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer which I gave him on 19th June and to which I need only add that dealings in gold coin and bullion are limited under the Defence Regulations to the Treasury and declares acting on behalf of the Treasury

Mr. Stokes

The answer which the Chancellor of the Exchequer gave me the other day dealt with the price paid by the Treasury for fine gold and not with the market price, and swill he state who fixes the market price?

Sir K. Wood

It is only in respect of transactions by the Treasury that the matter can arise. I will explain the position to my hon. Friend.
