HC Deb 23 January 1941 vol 368 cc276-7
14. Captain Cunningham-Reid

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that men registered for service in the Forces are evading their liability by leaving the addresses at which they are registered and living in tubes and shelters, thus evading their call-up papers; and what action he has taken, or is prepared to take, to stop such evasion of military service?

Mr. Bevin

I am not aware of anything of this sort. One outstanding feature of the operation of the Armed Forces Act is the almost 100 per cent. response which is made to each call-up. There are adequate arrangements for dealing with the very small number who do not respond to the call, provided, of course, that they are in this country.

Captain Cunningham-Reid

Does the Minister's answer mean that he is convinced that there are no such abuses?
