HC Deb 22 January 1941 vol 368 cc163-4
36. Mr. Wedgwood

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether the supervision of the "Mendoza" by the "Asturias" is to continue; what such supervision is costing this country apart from the loss of the services of the "Asturias"; and will he consider sinking the "Mendoza," in spite of international laws?

Mr. Alexander

As my right hon. Friend is doubtless aware, the "Mendoza" has now been intercepted.

Mr. Wedgwood

Is this business of hedge-hopping all along the coast of South America going on indefinitely with all French ships?

Mr. Alexander

My right hon. Friend will no doubt remember that questions of international law do not affect only the nations whose ships are intercepted, but also all other nations, some of them friendly to us.

Mr. Wedgwood

If the Germans break all international law at sea, why cannot we do it?

Mr. Alexander

Any request for further explanation had better be put to the Foreign Secretary.

Mr. Leach

Can the right. hon. Gentleman give the name of the captain responsible for this clever little piece of work?

Mr. Alexander

Perhaps my hon. Friend will put that Question down.
