HC Deb 22 January 1941 vol 368 c170
57. Mr. Ammon

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food to what extent supplies of meat are being received from the Channel Islands into this country?

Mr. Harcourt Johnstone (Secretary, Overseas Trade Department)

I have been asked to reply. No supplies of meat are at present being received in this country from the Channel Islands.

Mr. Ammon

Can the hon. Gentleman explain why it was that in a broadcast the Ministry of Food announced prices for the Channel Islands?

Mr. Johnstone

I think my hon. Friend's misapprehension arises from the fact that the Channel Islands were mentioned in three new Orders amending meat prices. This was done on the advice of the Law Officers in order to safeguard the position.
