HC Deb 21 January 1941 vol 368 c25
49. Mr. R. Gibson

asked the Prime Minister whether the Government will now take steps to put into operation the Caledonian Power Scheme?

The Prime Minister

No, Sir. The Caledonian Power Scheme would take some years to put into operation, and it is necessary to concentrate our energies on schemes offering a quicker return.

Mr. Gibson

Is the Prime Minister keeping in mind that the investigation showed at the time that the work would require only 2,000 men for 18 months, that carbide is a vital necessity, and that the Government of the day gave an undertaking that the work would go on?

Mr. A. Bevan

Is the right hon. Gentleman also aware that the undertaking given to the House by this Corporation, through the Minister for the Co-ordination of Defence, was not fulfilled?
